“It is important for the role model to have positive accomplishments, to be humble, and to have values that they live by.” –Lisa Opie
GoGirlOrg was lucky enough to have the opportunity to chat with the current Miss Nationwide, Lisa Opie. Miss Opie is a former Miss Virgin Islands US and Miss American Samoa US. This 22 year-old beauty queen isn’t just a pretty face though:
She’s educated. Lisa was home schooled, and attended both public and private schools. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in May of 2013 with a B.A. in Political Science and a Minor in History.
She’s worldly. Lisa has lived in 7 different states, 3 different countries, and has traveled to over 35 countries thus far.
She’s a go-getter. Lisa started her first business, Vizcaya Swimwear, when she was just 20 years old! She recently partnered with her friend, Stefania Sita, to start her next venture, Lady Code.
She’s has diverse goals. We talk a lot here at GoGirlOrg about the different aspects of being a woman and breaking out of social norms to unite the traits and values of leadership, power, success, femininity and family. When we asked Lisa about her life goals, she told us that not only did she want to graduate from law school, but she also hopes to be a wife and mother someday.
Alright, enough hype, here’s our interview with this inspirational young woman:
Q: What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?
Lisa: Not only overcoming bullying, but proving all of my former bullies wrong in so many different ways.
Q: What does the word Feminine mean to you?
Lisa: Embracing the fact that you are a lady through your actions, behavior, attire, and lifestyle.
Q: Similarly, what does the word feminism mean to you?
Lisa: Women who stand up for their rights and live a life of empowering each other. I believe that all women have the right to equality, but I do not support the misconception that feminists are women antagonizing men for certain issues in society.
Q: Who is a woman who has inspired you and how?
Lisa: Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom. She served as an incredible leader and fought for everything that she believed in. She never let her gender let her down.
Q: How important do you think it is to have female political and business leaders?
Lisa: It is just as important as having male political and business leaders. Equal opportunities are very important to me, but leadership is not about gender, it is about being effective, dedicated, and making a positive difference.
Q: What qualities do you think makes someone a good role model for girls?
Lisa: It is important for the role model to have positive accomplishments, to be humble, and to have values that they live by.
Q: What words of advice would you give for girls looking to achieve business and professional success?
Lisa: Never give up, and build and utilize a powerful network!
Well Lisa, by your own definition we here at GoGirlOrg think you make a fabulous role model! Thank-you for chatting with us and we look forward to watching all your future successes. Don’t forget to follow Lisa to keep up-to-date with everything going on in her life!
